| One of
the most important interventions in any patient is to achieve
a good blood pressure control. If we achieve excellent control
of blood pressure, the chances of developing complications of hypertension are decreased. High
blood pressure (also called hypertension) increases your chances
of having a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney disease, and other life-threatening illnesses.
Anyone can get it, and as you get older, the likelihood of your developing high blood
pressure increases. If you are overweight or obese or if you have diabetes, the odds are even
higher. High blood pressure is called "the silent killer"
because there often are no symptoms. Your numbers are your only warning. Reason why, frequent blood
pressure evaluation and learning how to interpret it is really important.
Your blood pressure reading uses these two numbers, the systolic
and diastolic pressures. Usually they are written one above or before the
other. A reading of
|
* 120/80 or lower is normal
blood pressure
* 140/90 or higher is
high blood pressure
* 120 and 139 for the
top number, or between 80 and 89 for the bottom number
is pre-hypertension
